Pym's gift for writing was matched by her gift for living, and she funneled into her novels her experiences at Oxford in the 1930s (a chauvinist world, where she nonetheless had a blast) in Nazi Germany (late in grasping what was going on there, she made a timely and full recovery) and as a Wren and a censor in World War II. In her latest, acclaimed literary biographer Byrne delivers a buoyant account of the life of Barbara Pym (1913-1980), taking her title from the one Pym gave her own diaries, a wealth of previously unmined material. (Which is such a shame, as the series is excellent, and its heroine, the occasionally difficult Blood Affinite Anastacya Mikhailov, is one of the best we’ve seen in recent years.)īut, as Zhao gears up to launch her new Song of the Last Kingdom series in early 2023, there’s no time like the present to take note of her name. By the time the third book in the trilogy hit shelves last year-a bittersweet series ender that wrestled with complex ethical questions of corruption, leadership, and morality-it seemed its moment had passed. The launch of the first novel in the series was unfortunately overshadowed by a storm of vitriolic Twitter feuding and pre-release criticism that pushed its publication date back and likely prevented the book from garnering much of the initial attention it might have otherwise received. Amelie Wen Zhao’s Blood Heir trilogy deserved more praise and attention than it got. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Urn:oclc:85019241 Republisher_date 20140107023126 Republisher_operator Scandate 20140103013656 Scanner . I kept writing for fun, wrote MANY books and then in 2009 I decided to try to get published. I wrote my first book which will probably never see the light of day in the early 90's. ![]() My first book was started after I read a real bomb of a book that ticked me off with really horrible characters and a plot that was shabby at best and I thought. I wrote poetry in my teens and then moved on to short stories. ![]() I moved on to John Saul, Stephen King, Richard Laymon, Agatha Christie, and then found romance. By the time I was nine years old I had an adult library card where I visited often. I read entire series (Pippi Longstocking, Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys, Trixie Beldon, The Borrowers, etc) in a matter of days at a time. No, I didn't know that I always wanted to write. I believe in romance, I've always been a daydreamer, and I'm a HUGE fan of books, always have been. I live in Southern California and I can't function without iced coffee. I'm married happily, I met my dream guy 20 years ago, and we have 4 children. I'm a full time home 'supervisor' which is a nice word for saying I'm a housewife. I had a rather short area here telling a little about me but then I had more than a few people ask me to expand it so. ![]() |
